Ogham and Claddagh Cross

SKU: BC001

Legend has it that the Claddagh symbol was originated by Richard Joyce, a Galway seafarer kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery in North Africa where he learned the art of a goldsmith.

When he was released, nothing could keep him from his beloved Galway where he returned to become a master goldsmith and where he created the Claddagh ring.

The Ogham alphabet is the earliest form of Irish writing and often called the Celtic tree alphabet. The characters consist of a series of lines and notches scored across a long stem.

It was usually read from bottom to top. It is named after the warrior Ogma, God of Eloquence and Literature.

This contemporary cross combines these two to create a very unique Irish cross in sterling silver.
